Promoting Livelihood Opportunities For Rural Youth

The round table will provide an opportunity for participants to exchange views on what agencies such as IFAD could do to improve the livelihoods of rural youth in developing countries, with particular reference to Sub-Saharan Africa and the Near East and North Africa. It is important to emphasise that the Millennium Development Goals do single out youth as a key target group. Target 16 of the MDGs is ‘to develop and implement strategies for decent and productive work for youth’. The 2007 World Development Report published by the World Bank focuses on youth, which is a sign of a growing awareness among governments, donor agencies and civil society organisations about the actual and potential roles of youth in the development process.
